From Political Prisoner to Refugee
Michael Caballero’s life took a dramatic turn when he found himself wrongfully sentenced to 27 years in a Nicaraguan prison for standing up against the rise of the dictatorship under Daniel Ortega. Separated from his wife, Vanessa, and two young sons, Michael and Dylan, he endured the unimaginable in bug-infested, crowded cells with polluted water and constant violence.
Despite the pain of being unrecognized by his children during a “special visit” arranged by the authorities, Michael held onto hope, repeating to his wife, “We will get out soon. After 4 years and 3 months, that day finally came. The U.S. negotiated the release of 222 political prisoners, including Michael, to fly to Washington D.C. as refugees.

A New Beginning at AP Corp
Sponsored by the Sattre family in Maryland, Michael was reunited with his loved ones and ready to start anew. With a background in vinyl lettering for vehicles and motorcycles, he set his sights on AP Corp, a leading provider of fleet wraps and window film solutions in Maryland.
Although Michael didn’t speak English, he refused to let that barrier stop him. After an initial unsuccessful application, CEO and Founder Bill Valway recognized Michael’s potential and was determined to bring him onto the team.
Through countless hours of communication via Google Translate, Michael joined AP Corp’s fleet wraps and window film division, later followed by his wife Vanessa and fellow political prisoner, Michael Anderson.
